Prem Watsa, The Indian Behind BlackBerry's $4.7 Billion Buyout

This means he has a heavy pile of fortune in his treasure chest and is ready to do some real business. Yet, it’s hard to assess his fortunes as in a 2009 profile he described himself as "the richest, savviest guy you've never heard of."

Coming back to the Blackberry saga, on Monday the company announced that it agreed to be acquired by a consortium led by Fairfax for $4.7 billion. Now this can turn out to be a ground breaking or a ‘good move gone bad’ story, but it takes time.

Watsa’s history

Watsa was born in Hyderabad, India in 1950 and was orphaned as a boy. Watsa eventually trained to be a chemical engineer. He graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras in 1971/1972 with a bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering. From business school, he immigrated to Canada and attended the University of Western Ontario. Some say he had only $8 in his pocket. Whatever be the story line, Canada was the right place for Watsa’s dynasty.
