Netas and Their Betas: Legendary Duos in Indian Politics

The Abdullah Dynasty

The Abdullah family has been ruling the state of Jammu and Kashmir since 1975. They are the oldest political family of the state and the Abdullah-Dynasty has largely taken over Srinagar’s throne. Sheikh Abdullah has served as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir State after its provisional accession to India in 1947. The son of Sheikh Abdullah, Farooq Abdullah took charge of politics in India’s northern most state after his father’s death and became its Chief Minister.

Omar Abdullah, Farooq’s son has carried out their family tradition of being the Chief Minister. At the age of 29, Omar Abdullah was elected to 12th Lok Sabha and became the youngest minister. In 2002, Omar replaced his father’s position and became the President of the National Conference party. Omar has played an exceptional role in being the successor and has kept up their family status in the Indian politics.
