Mumbai Emerges as India's Costliest City for Expats: Survey

Many European cities and several Asian cities were ranked on top in the list of the world’s most expensive locations for expatriates. New York was employed as the base city and all other locations were evaluated against New York.

Barb Marder, Senior Partner and Mercer’s Global Mobility Practice Leader said “Recent world events, including economic and political upheavals, which resulted in currency fluctuations, cost inflation for goods and services, and volatility in accommodation prices have impacted these cities making them expensive.”

The Cost of Living Survey 2013 covers 214 cities around the world to measure the comparative cost of over 200 items in each city including housing, transport, food, clothing, household goods and entertainment. The movements of the currency are measured against the U.S. dollar. The cost of housing plays an essential role in determining where cities are ranked.

This survey was mainly carried out to facilitate multinational companies and Governments to decide compensation allowances for their expatriate employees.
