This controversial murder created an outrage in the country. A talented law student of DU, Priyadarshini Mattoo, was found death on January 23, 1996. She was in her uncle’s home when Santosh Kumar Singh, Mattoo’s senior in her college, approached her that morning and strangled her with an electric wire. The son of influential IPS officer also outraged her modesty and smacked her face with a helmet which made it completely unrecognizable. The criminal was sentenced to death by the Delhi High Court in 2006 but the decision was later changed by giving him life imprisonment.

Jessica Lal’s controversial murder case witnessed a nation-wide protest as well as an immense coverage of media. Her murder took place at Delhi’s Mehrauli Bar when Manu Sharma demanded the celebrity barmaid for more alcohol. Son of influential politician of congress party, Manu, offered Jessica 1000 despite which she denied serving more alcohol post 12.30 AM. This urged Manu to shoot this Delhi based model in the head, killing her instantly. Under heavy media pressure, Sharma was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Delhi High Court on December 20, 2006.
