India's Top Political Bigwigs Who Hogged Major Limelight

Lalu Prasad Yadav: With 46 minutes (3.05 per cent) of prime time news coverage in his credit, Rashtriya Janata Dal Chief Lalu Prasad Yadav has come up in the fourth spot. One of the most charismatic Indian politicians, "Lalu" sprung to national prominence in 1992, emerging as a protector of Muslim rights in Bihar, a state with nearly 100 million people where he served as chief minister.

But he has been implicated and jailed for numerous scandals, including a scam in which his government misappropriated millions of rupees set aside for subsidized fodder for farm animals. As the head of India's railways, Yadav has led a near-miraculous turnaround of the world's largest employer, which was facing a $12 billion deficit, increasing capacity, adding air-conditioned carriages for the poor, and improving efficiencies.

Raj Thackeray: The founder and president of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (Maharashtra Renaissance Army), Raj Thackeray is the nephew of former Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray, and cousin of current Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray. He made his political foray on March 9, 2006. Thackeray’s party, MNS was founded on the ideology to be the benefactor of the local Marathi population; principles that party members felt the Shiv Sena had given up. During his days in Shiv Sena, he openly criticized new urban developments on various mounds of Pune. Off late, he is seen raising his support towards Modi. This has garnered him 33 minutes (2.20 per cent) coverage over this period and has come up in the 5th spot.
