He progressed to win a gold medal in the 400 meter competition at the 1958 Cardiff Commonwealth Games. The latter achievement made him the first gold medalist at the Commonwealth Games from independent India. He competed in Pakistan and his success there earned him the nickname of The Flying Sikh. In 1960 Rome Olympics, The Flying Sikh finished fourth in the 400 meter event, missing out on a bronze medal by a whisker.
