He followed his gut and formed Gili when no one believed that branding jewellery will have a future worth spending on. He entered the business in 1975 and took over the reins of a Rs 50 crore firm in 1985 after his father Chinubhai Choksi died. The company was named after his two daughter—Gita and Anjali.

Initially, trading in rough and polished diamonds formed the core business for Gitanjali, and it was considered one of the biggest exporters of raw diamonds worldwide. This led to Gitanjali entering the international jewellery arena and it gradually started expanding the business but Mehul realized that by selling Diamond as a commodity, Gitanjali was not realizing its full potential. Today, Gitanjali's product portfolio consists of several brands, including Gili, Nakshatra, Asmi, D'damas, Maya, Diya and Sangini; they are sold through over 4,000 points of sale in multiple retail formats.

Asian Star Company Ltd (Asian Star), established as a partnership firm in 1971, is involved in cutting and polishing of diamonds and manufacturing of jewellery. In 2001, it ventured into manufacturing of jewellery.
