Indian Army Warriors who Define Courage

Wounds, grenade attacks and gunfire didn’t deter Piru Singh. Seriously injured, he reached the top, attacked one of the enemy positions and emptied all his rounds. By the time he ran out of ammunition, he realized that he was the lone survivor as most of his associates were either dead or seriously injured. This enraged him further and he started hurling grenades at the next trench and killing the occupants. Suddenly, a grenade hurled by the enemies exploded near Piru. This explosion injured half of his face and one eye. Severely bleeding from his injuries, he gathered all of his strength to step out of his trench and hurl another grenade at the second enemy position. During this process, he was hit by a bullet in the head. But his sacrifice to expose himself to the enemy fire did not go in wane, as the grenade hurled by him took out all the occupants in the last enemy position, thereby accomplishing the mission.

Company Havildar Major Piru Singh was awarded Param Vir Chakra posthumously, for this bravery.
