India: Powering Global Designs
It is seen that the average age of designers in India remains less than 30 and the designers are young compared to the designers in the U.S. and Europe. This actually has a benefit because they are new graduates who do not know their own constraints. People who are in the industry for a long time have their own style in designing and their approaches are firm. The whole new generation of young designers would find it difficult initially; most of them would not have a clue on how to do traditional gate level designing but they would be very good at system level concepts, architectural designs and software. These young designers bring tremendous energy to an organization. India has now emerged to become a real important design centre and has a strong global outlook.
The core areas of focus for India
India must invest to develop more national product companies. There is an impressive and talented community of design centers working on behalf of multi-national accounts but India still lags behind in development of home brand products. Currently, India is heavily focused on design service bureaus that grow solely by serving their clients. Their engineers have great design skills and perhaps some should look to turn those towards developing products of their own that could be marketed. This may eventually come naturally as smart engineers working in service companies take the initiative to create product start-up companies of their own.
