India: Land of Spirituality, Ranks Low on Religion



Ghana (Ranked 1):

Ghana is the most religious country in the world. Religious tolerance in Ghana is very high. The religious composition of Ghana in the first post independence population census in 1960 was 30 percent Muslims, 28 percent Christians, 38 percent traditionalist and 8 percent others. But the Christian population rose to 62 percent in 1985. The major Christian celebrations of Christmas and Easter are recognized as national holidays in Ghana. Ramadan, the Islamist month of fasting is observed by Muslims across the country. Other important traditional occasions like the Adae, which occur fortnightly and the annual Odwira festival of Akan, is celebrated among the Muslims in Ghana.

Nigeria (Ranked 2):

Nigeria is the second most religious country in the world. According to the survey reports of 2003, 50.4 percent of Nigeria’s population is Muslims, 48.2 percent are Christians and the rest 1.4 percent adhere to other religions. Christianity is one of the main religions in Nigeria. The majority of Christians are found in the South-east and Middle-belt region. The Nigerian Baptist Convention has about three million baptized members. Nigeria has also the largest Muslim population in West Africa. Hinduism has also spread across Nigeria, mainly by the immigration of Hindus from India and of Hare Krishna Missionaries. Many Nigerians had converted to Hinduism mainly due to the efforts of ISKCON Missionaries.
