India Fails to Control Child Marriage

Even though the number of child marriage has declined over the year with the support of human rights, yet the current numbers are still alarming. A global partnership ‘ Girls Not Brides’ formed by ‘The Elders’ initiated by Nelson Mandela, has over 190 non-governmental organizations dedicated to tackle child marriage on the world map.
The United Nation Population Fund (UNFPA) conducted a global survey called ‘Marrying To Young: End Child Marriage’ which reports that 47 percent of women in India who are in the age group of 20 to 24 years are married before the age of 18 years, as recorded during 2000 to 2011.

The Bhopal based Mahila Chetna Manch led by its president Nirmal Buch informed that as per the Human Development Report 2012 the number of child marriages have cut down by half in India. Her organization is currently keeping the track on child marriages in about 25 villages, which are located in the districts of Rajgarh and Sehore in Bhopal.
Buch said “We are trying to create adolescent awareness and have selected change agents who can work with these communities to create greater social awareness.”
