India Among World's 10 Most Dangerous Countries For Journalists
7. Brazil:
There are several reports on persistent violence against journalists in Brazil. As of 2013, three journalists were killed in this country for reporting issues like local crime and corruption.
Viviana Giacaman, director for Latin America programs at Freedom House said, “Brazil continues to be one of the most dangerous places for journalists to work,” reports Freedom House. “Reporters continue to be under attack for reporting on issues of corruption and crime. The Brazilian government must ensure that this crime is thoroughly investigated as a sign to the international community that cases of violence against journalists are being taken seriously,” added Giacaman.
6. Somalia:
Somalia, another most dangerous nation for journalists witnessed an estimated death toll of 48 in 2013. The report called it a ‘black year’ for Somalia. So far it’s been the deadliest year for media personnel in Somalia, with twice the number of journalists killed as compared to 2009. Al- Shebaab or the local government officials are held responsible for this violence who wants to suppress news outlets. The report said, “Somali journalists are subject to the most appalling constraints in both the capital Mogadishu and in the rest of the country. The lack of a stable government in this failed state for the past 20 years, endemic violence and generalized impunity all contribute to the grim death toll.”
