IBM Makes $1 Billion Investment in Flash

Strategies for Flash storage have also been formulated by players like NetApp, EMC, and Fusion-io.

Steve Mills, the head of the division for software and systems at IBM at a recent event in New York, declared that with Flash now at a key tipping point, solid data centers are soon going to appear in the field of IT.

"Adoption of SSD is definitely taking place," said Al Candela, head of technical and services at Thomson Reuters. "You can argue over time it's going to be more cost effective to implement Flash.", as has been reported by zdnet.com.

Importance of Flash Technology

The importance of the solid state getting pushed by IBM has now been made very clear. Enterprise data centers are being operated by the massive customer base at IBM. Also, Flash systems are being pushed more by the service units at IBM than any other vendor out there.

The meeting of innovative technology with the economic scale has resulted in the hitting of all inflection points. "We think we're at that point with Flash or solid-state disk," said Mills.

According to him, Flash data centers will soon be driven by factors like new opportunities in big data, cost reduction and economies of scale. While a rotating disk drive could run a $6 per gigabyte, Flash can now run $10 per gigabyte. "There's no question that Flash has compelling economics," he said.
