Foreign Investors not Interested in Asian Security Startups Anymore

2. Strong Competition for Investors

The second reason Asian security startups are not as attractive to venture capitalists and larger companies are because they face difficulties with customer demand and profitability. There are already many domestic players in the network security front and with the explosion of Internet usage, more Internet content security tools are booming and this could mean greater competition for them.

Also, considering desktop front there's still low demand for paid antivirus and antispam software among Asians, because many citizens especially those in China, are used to getting pirated software instead of paying for desktop security software.

Sally Shan, managing director of Haborvest Partners, a China-based private equity said, “Asia is "way behind" the U.S. in terms of security technology. Even though these Asian security startups continue to grow, the market is still smaller and less established than the U.S., and Asia is at least 5 years behind.”
