Facebook Wants to Revolutionize the $55 Billion Market

The Open Compute Project:

The Open Compute Project is one of the biggest open source venues of the year. And this year, the event simply got bigger. The project has added excitement among tech vendors and IT users, leading to the addition of more than a dozen new members including storage-oriented companies like EMC, Fusion-io, Hitachi, Applied Micro, ARM and Sandisk.

The interesting fact about this event is that all the designs contributed into the project will be considered open source, meaning that anyone can take them, use them, modify them to build their own servers.

According to Frankovsky, "these announcements will enable data center operators to build systems that better fit the workloads they need to run" as well as "unlock even more efficiencies in data center construction and operations."

OCP doesn’t mean ‘the end’ for big guns like IBM, HP and Dell, although it takes some of the control out of their hands. Sometimes this event can be a new opportunity and it looks like HP and Dell have realized this fact as they are also participating in the project.
