Exposed: Tech CEO's Do-Not-Hire Code

Apple to Google

Google, in 2006, chanced upon Apple employees when they where recruiting for its upcoming mobile division, which later developed Android. Here is the email exchange between Apple’s Steve Jobs and Google’s Eric Schmidt.

Jobs mailed, “I am told that Google’s new cell phone software group is relentlessly recruiting in our iPod group. If this is indeed one, can you put a stop to it?”

Schmidt replied: “I'm sorry to hear this; we have a policy of no recruiting of Apple employees. I will investigate immediately!”

Apple to Google… again

Then again in 2007, Steve Jobs came across an email from a Google recruiter pursuing one of his engineers; he mailed CEO Eric Schmidt, saying “I would be very pleased if your recruiting department would stop doing this.”

Schmidt sought an explanation to his team, saying: “I believe we have a policy of no recruiting from Apple and this is a direct inbound request. Can you get this stopped and let me know why this is happening?”

Arnnon Geshuri, Google's staffing strategist (now the vice president of human resources at Tesla Motors), replied: “On this specific case, the sourcer who contacted this Apple employee should not have and will be terminated within the hour. We are scrubbing the sourcer's record to ensure she did not contact anyone else.”
