AIIMS Students Take Pledge to Promote Organ Donation

“The institute’s ORBO is the country’s nodal unit for the organ donation and was set up with the purpose of encouraging donations, fair and equitable distribution and optimum utilization of human organs,’’ added a senior AIIMS official.

It is unfortunate that organ donation in India is still considered as social and religious myth and as such, it has been witnessing a very pitiable growth despite there being cases of over one lakh brain deaths in the country annually.

“We are trying to create awareness about organ donation by telling the common man that organs are harvested from brain-dead patients with utmost care and dignity by specially-trained surgeons, which does not leave the body disfigured in any way. It is also important for the prospective donor to share his decision to donate his organs with his family to make it easier for them to carry out his wish,” the official exclaimed.

The program was initiated by AIIMS Director M C Mishra, who explained the importance of organ and blood donation during the festival. Organ donation is a novel job as it benefits the medical field, he had said. According to Mishra, many patients lose their lives just because they do not get organs to replace their failed organs.
