Government Notifies Standard For Digital Preservation Of e-Governance Data

The digital preservation standard and best practices are developed based on the study of various e-governance implementations. It also involved the study of various international e-governance digital preservation initiatives from US, Canada, UK and the ISO standards. In addition, the standard also takes into account several legal provisions drawn from the IT Act 2000/2008, RTI Act, and the Public Records Act for the purpose of digital preservation.

Addressing the media, Dr Dinesh Katre, Associate Director & HoD – HCDC Group, C-DAC, Pune said that “it took two years of painstaking study, a series of reviews through expert committees from government as well as industry and collaborative research to evolve the notified standard. The standard forms the foundation for the introduction of Electronic Records Management (ERM) as part of e-Governance in India, and defines the paradigm for creating trusted digital repositories for digital preservation. When implemented, the standard will enable the seamless sharing of information as well as interoperability and future usability of data across systems in the long term spanning 10, 25, 50 years and permanent. This is a key achievement, which will see our citizens benefitting from the myriad e-Governance projects in the future.”
