9 Lessons The Tech World Learned In 2012

LESSON 1: WCIT-12 conference is a farce

The World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT-12) has ended, to the contrary to the objectives people thought this conference would bestow; the problem of internet governance remains inconclusive. The conference was ostensibly about updating and harmonizing international telecommunications protocols like mobile roaming rates, but some countries, including quite a few authoritarian regimes, and phone companies sought to use it as a vehicle for controlling internet content and levying charges on those who create and provide it.

Most of the western countries however refused to sign up the proposition that the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) should have any major role in internet governance. The decision is pretty admirable but for the fact that the internet now is a global phenomena then just a western one. Good global governance for internet yet remains an unfulfilled need.
