8 Politically Rousing Slogans That Shook India

2. Indira Hatao, Desh Bachao, (Remove Indira, Save the Nation):
During the time when India's economy was in bad shape, a state of emergency was declared by Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India. This led to a dramatic turn in the Indian political affairs. The democracy was brought to a grinding halt and all the fundamental rights and legal remedies protected by the Constitution of The Republic of India were suspended. But the emergency rule faced severe criticism when several opposition parties unitedly formed Janata Party to attack her for ruling as a dictator and endangering human rights and democracy in India. This issue became the leading campaign for the Janata party, drawing great masses of people in rallies across the country. It was during that time when Jayaprakash Narayan coined the slogan ‘Indira Hatao, Desh Bachao’ (Remove Indira, Save the Nation) putting his message loud and resonating during the campaign.
