Kolkata is number four on the list of metros with highest literacy rate. It stands at 87.14 percent as of 2011 and was at 80.86 pecent a decade ago. The total population recorded in 2011 is 4.48 million as per the census. The literacy rate in India is accounted only for those above the age of 7; all children below seven years are exempted. Kolkata runs both government and private schools. The medium of education are Bengali and English, Hindi and Urdu is mostly used in central Kolkata.
Kolkata has always been a city of artistic and literary heritage. As the prior capital of India, Kolkata is the place of origin for modern Indian art and literary ideas.
