5 Technologies Invented in the Wrong Century

2. Germany’s WW2 Videophone

Year: 1936

Technology: Videophones

Video and voice over IP have made it possible for us to see the real-time images of the person we are communicating with. The recent developments in 3G and 4G cell phone modules have materialized the actual idea of videophones.

How was it implemented?

With the help of Dr. Georg Schubert the German Post office had developed the first videophone network of the world. The telephone device consisted of a small TV screen with which the user could see the real time images of the other user. The network which spread across Berlin, Munich, Nuremberg and Leipzig could transmit 180 Line resolution images at 25 fps. The whole network was then unfortunately destroyed by the serial bombings and attacks on Berlin towards the later stage of the World War 2.
