Although the name is Marocchino, the coffee has originated in Italy and not in Morocco. The deceiving name Marocchino has been derived from a type of light brown leather used to make hair bands the color of which resembled the coffee.

This coffee is more popularly known as Ca phe da and is similar to Greek Frappe. It was introduced to Vietnam by French colonists and is prepared from Vietnamese-grown dark roast coffee. The coffee was initially made using sweetened condensed milk as there was shortage of milk in Vietnam in the 19th century. The ritual of using condensed milk still continues.
