With the release of Deepa Mehta’s new film ‘Midnight’s Children’ she has made news with the making and release of the film. The movie is based on the book written by the eminent writer Salman Rushdie, who won the Bookers prize for the book in 1981. The film adaptation of the book was shown at the Toronto International Film festival and also the Vancouver and BFI London film festivals. The film is nominated for Best Picture and seven other categories at the Canadian Screen Awards 2013.
Mehta is known for her elements trilogy, Fire, Earth and Water the three films were made in 1996, 1998 and 2005 respectively. ‘Fire’, was not well received by the Indian audiences. The film was the first to explicitly project homosexual relations. It was treated with several protests staged by certain groups in India. Even the shooting of her film ‘Water’ was objected, with protesters impeding the shooting and vandalizing the set on the banks of the river Ganga. Finally it was filmed in Sri Lanka, under a false name and new cast, to escape protests. The film was nominated in the 2007, Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language film, as a Canadian film.
