After the news of the petrol price hike broke, people thronged at petrol pumps in Rajasthan to get their tanks full. "There is a sudden panic among the people. Some are unnecessarily creating trouble by breaking queues and threatening the employees," said Suneet Bagai, president of the Rajasthan Petroleum Dealers' Association, stated TOI, Jaipur.

After the petrol price hike, MDMK leader Vaiko said that the Tamil Nadu government should reduce the 27 percent Value Added Tax (VAT) on fuel to minimize the impact. He said, “The hike citing the falling Indian Rupee amounts to daylight robbery. The Indian Rupee is depreciating because of the wrong economic policies of the UPA government", reported ndtv.com

After the steep hike in petrol prices announced by the centre last year, the Uttarakhand government decided to waive off VAT on the increased amount, providing a relief of 1.87 per litre to the people of the state.

Protesting the price hike in petrol, LDF convener Vaikom Viswan in a statement in Thiruvananthapuram said, "This (the price hike) is a cruel blow on the people of the country who were already reeling under the pressure of steep price rise"
