To answer this, Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) launched an annual report that looks into the policies of major Internet companies, from email providers, social media companies, and cloud storage services all the way through to ISPs, to find out, as the report is titled, “Who Has Your Back?“. Read to know 12 such companies rated on the 6 categories like:

  1. Require a warrant for content of communications: The company requires the government to obtain a warrant supported by probable cause before they will hand over the content of user communications.
  2. Tell users about government data requests: The company promises to tell users when the government seeks their data unless prohibited by law.
  3. Publish transparency reports: The companies publishes statistics on how often they provide user data to the government.
  4. Publish law enforcement guidelines: The company makes public policies or guidelines they have explaining how they respond to data demands from the government.
  5. Fight for users’ privacy rights in courts: The company has a public record of resisting overbroad government demands for access to user content in court.
  6. Fight for users’ privacy in Congress: The company supports the efforts to modernize electronic privacy laws to defend users in the digital age by joining the Digital Due Process Coalition.
