10 Rape Capitals of The World
Italy:
In Italy, traditional attitudes towards rape are yet to change, though in recent years there have been many advances. During the first half of the 20th century, in Italy, like in many other places, rape victims were often expected and forced to marry their rapist. The article of law whereby a rapist could extinguish his crime by marrying his victim was abolished in 1981. Considering rapes happened in Italy against Italian women, 69 percent are perpetrated by partners, husbands or fiances and only 6 percent by strangers.
South Africa:
South Africa has extremely high levels of sexual assault cases. “The prevalence of rape and particularly multiple perpetrator rape… is unusually high,” said by the think-tank, the Institute for Security Studies (ISS). Every year an estimated of 500,000 rape cases happen within the country. As South Africa began its transition to democracy in the early 1990s, it again saw a rapid increase in reported rapes and other violent crimes. As per the police crime statistics released in September 2012, in 2011/2012, there were a total of 9 193 sexual offences reported to the South African Police Services (SAPS) in the Western Cape. This translates into just under 27 cases per day, which is amongst the highest reported rates of rape in the world.
