10 Indian-Americans In Race For 2014 U.S. Polls
Upendra Chivukula
Chivukula, the first Indian-American lawmaker in the New Jersey State Assembly, has announced his intention to try his fortune for U.S. House of Representatives from 12th Congressional District of New Jersey. Chivukula, a Democrat, will contest for this seat, which is currently occupied by Rush Holt.
Chivukula would have to win the Democratic primary this summer to bag the party's ticket for November elections, which he had lost in 2012 House elections from a different seat.
An engineer by profession, Chivukula is not an amateur to the game of politics. He contentedly won re-election to his current seat in last year’s elections. He was the Deputy Mayor of the Franklin Township in 1998 and Mayor in 2000, and was first elected to the State Assembly in 2002.
Chivukula previously ran for New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District seat in 2012, but unfortunately lost to serving Republican representative Leonard Lance.
