10 Countries With Most Ridiculous Internet Laws
#6 India
The Law: Till 2008, there were no strict laws in the country for monitoring and controlling the internet. But after the Mumbai terrorist attacks, the national and state governments have imposed certain laws which stepped up Internet surveillance and pressure on technical service providers, while publicly rejecting accusations of censorship. But they are still not effective in a large scale since the blocked websites are accessed by people with help of proxy servers.
In its 2012 report, Reporters without Borders, an organization which stands for freedom of Press and Information included India in its surveillance list calling “World’s biggest democracy is undermining freedom of expression and the protection of Internet users’ personal data.”
Penalties: There are no reported cases of people imprisoned for talking on internet freedom, but the country had strict restrictions on pornographic sites. If you are found to peek into any of those sites in a regular basis, you can earn up to seven years in prison and fines up to 10 lakh.
