After three days of Republic Day Parade, a moving ceremony known as the “Beating Retreat” is held at Vijay Chowk in New Delhi. It revives an ancient war custom where the troops stop fighting at sunset. The ceremony held on January 29th every year, marks the formal end of the Republic day celebrations. It opens with a parade by a selected number of contingents of the armed forces and climaxes with all the bands playing united. At sharp 6pm, the buglers sound the retreat and the National Flag is lowered to the National Anthem bringing the Republic day celebrations to an end.
