Family Background
My father Mr Sujit Chatterjee is a retired HR and Industrial Relations person from the famous RPG Group who had special expertise in industrial negotiations between the workers and the management; my mother Mrs Sikha Chatterjee is a homemaker; my wife Susmita is a Chartered Accountant who is also a banker and works with Citibank as an Assistant Vice President as well. My son Shloke is just eight years old and studies in class 3 in St.Xavier's Collegiate School Kolkata.
Current Job & Role
I am currently working as an Assistant Vice President with YES BANK LTD. and my functional role is that of a Branch Business Leader more commonly known as a Branch Head wherein I take care of the entire profit centre of a very significant branch unit of the Bank in Kolkata city. My job profile includes handling the entire operations and business development of the unit along with profit and loss management and of course brand building and creating market recall for the Bank.
Important Career Decision
I guess the most tricky ones have been the most important ones; I have always been on the look out for the right opportunity at the right time and tried to fit the pegs in the holes; I think the most important one had been my conscious shift from an operational sort of a role at the initial stages of my career to a more dynamic business oriented sort of a role wherein I could not only interact with people which has always been a passion but also I could quantify what I was doing.
Career Expectation
Well I surely see myself heading this part of the country, the Eastern Region I mean, in a particular functional vertical.
New trends in domain
Oh yes of course; in my career span of around 12+ years in the banking space, one thing has always been dynamic and ever changing - the technology. In modern day banking technology plays such a predominant role be it providing the state of art electronic platform to our millions of clients to getting ourselves accustomed to the best of banking software and tech practices.
Changes in My Profession
Frankly over the years it has become much more challenging ; the number of competitors have increased and so have their branches multiplied; the customers are actually spoilt with choices in almost every industry including the banking space; resultantly this has led to cut throat competition leading to a situation of struggle for existence and survival of the fittest theories which were pioneered by Darwin almost 200 years back.
Journey in corporate world
Well, I started my career with HDFC Bank as a Stock Exchange executive in their Transactional Banking department; I must say my two year stint with this bank actually was like a launch pad for my career; I saw and learnt banking so closely that I actually started getting real interest in it. However my shift from transactional banking to retail banking and more specifically branch banking was a conscious shift because I wanted to expand my reach to more number of clients rather than very selective ones. Thereby, my journey went through several other banks at different levels from Executive to Deputy Manager to Relationship Manger to Operations Head and Customer Service Manger to finally an Assistant Vice President and Branch Business Leader with Yes Bank.
Outlook about India as A developed country
I think this does not have a very generic answer; each of us are professionals in our own fields and only when number of professionals come together there is a culmination and development of professional culture and work ethics and these in turn would lead to the development of a better economy, a better society and finally a developed country from a developing one.
Way to ensure growth
I think I try to take myself through a continuous learning process and by that I don't mean just academic awareness of my subject area but more importantly a holistic approach to learning where there is a constant struggle to learn and grow in all spheres of life be it the way I conduct my disposition to the way I manage and lead my team.
Achievements
I have always been an achiever in terms of meeting my personal and professional goals; Only by God's grace I have been able to meet the personal benchmarks I had set to reach my goals; similarly, professionally also I have been always lucky in all my banks to be in the limelight, be it to be among a very few selective people to be chosen for a company esop in an HDFC or a DCB or even an ING Bank or even being selected for the MD's Talent Pool in ING Bank or also qualifying for International Banking and Business Summits; One important achievement I would like to mention is that while I was working as a Senior Branch Manager with the main branch od DCB bank Kolkata, I was selected by invitation by the very reputed Bengal Chamber of Commerce to be a part of their banking and Financial Sub Committee.
Outlook about option to start career again
I would like to keep my eyes open more wide because even a decade back when I started my career, things were a lot less complicated and competition was not that stiff; now the economic financial and banking scenario has become much more complicated and dynamic and hence I would require to be much more alert if I have to survive.
Advice for followers
I think the young professionals of today should always remember that there is no short cut to success or growth and that no matter wherever they have passed out from they should not expect to sit inside the glass cabin from the very first day of their career; they should be open enough to learn from experience and nothing can beat that.
