Brief description about me
I work at Qualcomm India as a Embedded Software Engineer. I graduated in May 2011, so have roughly 1.5 years of experience. I had done by internship at Qualcomm before joining as a full time employee, I am with Qualcomm for the last 2 years.

I work on CDMA Protocol Physical Layer Development. Qualcomm is the inventor of CDMA and it today is a pioneer of 3G, 4G/LTE Mobile technologies.

I don’t manage any group, as we work in very small teams here at Qualcomm.  But I have been shouldering a lot of responsibilities in the team  some of them being managing the build process of Software, Integration,  Training new joiners, mentoring them etc.

Challenges in job
Every day at Qualcomm brings with it a new set of challenges, we work closely with various Mobile phone manufacturers to name a few Samsung, HTC , Nokia and others.

The workload we have per day is quite significant and therefore we need to enhance/optimize ourselves so that we are able to deliver quality products to our customers on time.

Technical expertise, time Management and proper planning are the outcomes/results of our daily work and challenges, and this learning is going to help me in future.

Job made easy
Proper and prior planning, time management.

Upcoming trends
Telecomm business revenue in India is dominated by the Voice, data usage is still very low. I feel revenues from Voice will saturate soon and data usage will be the game changers for the operators.  With the 4G technologies such as LTE this can be achieved.

My point of view
Indian’s are talented and there is no doubt in that. The interest for research is very less in India. The number of Phd’s that Indian Universities generate is quite low when compared with the western universities. A research oriented career does not excite students today. Everyone and including myself looked for a high paying job in a Multinational after graduation.
On a contrary note Iphone’s, Windows , Facebook’s were invented by college dropouts , they were/are wizards of technology, creativity and innovation. Our bad luck, they should have been born in our country.

My ambitions
I fell in love with Telecom Industry during my internship at Ericsson India. I had decided that this is where I want to make my career , so there is no way I am leaving it.

But as the goals are concerned I would move to a more business oriented role and less of a technical. The first decade of this millennium witnessed this  industry grow leaps and bounds but the next 2 decades  will be more exciting.

Family background
My family has always been into business, I was the first technical graduate of my family. My grandfather had started a business of selling sarees and we are still in it and doing really well.
The business instincts in me comes from here.
Advice to professionals
Do’s   : Keep your eyes and ears always open, there is lots see and learn here. Work hard but smartly.

Advice to students
Luckily I got few chances to give advice to the current students when I visited my college.

I told them a very simple thing which one of our Professor’s had told us, things we learn at college may or may not come to use when we start working in the Industry, but one “needs to learn how to learn things.”

As engineers we always have to keep up with the fast changing technology and its very important for us to always learn new things and keep evolving as per the need and demand of the industry.
