Prized Accomplishment(s):
I helped develop methods using Morpholino oligos for inhibiting miRNA maturation and for detecting miRNA in tissues. I designed & built a dust resuspension system to make sized-particulate standards for x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. I've helped guide students though college science coursework.
Done Differently:
No, this has been a fascinating path.
Advice For New Professionals:
Learn broadly and be prepared to take on any task needed.
Degrees That Matter:
For my work, undergraduate background in chemistry and biology has been very valuable, as has my graduate work in Environmental Sciences and Resources: Biology. Training in writing and computer science has also been very useful.
Plans For The Future:
Likely I'll still be working with Gene Tools, finding new applications for Morpholino antisense and helping people work though their experimental challenges.
Changes In The Professional Environment:
Our company has grown from four people when I joined to 14 in 2012. We have moved from a small rented space to a 2,000 square meter factory. We are manufacturing and shipping on a larger scale.
Other Thoughts:
The best part of my work in never knowing what new challenges will appear tomorrow. The work is always changing, a consequence of being with a small company in the rapidly evolving biotech industry.
Career Profile:
I am representing the company at conferences, helping customers by phone and internet, developing new products (most recently an LED-based UV illuminator), and building or maintaining devices to support production and research. New paper: http://bio.biologists.org/content/early/2012/04/11/bio.2012
Working Life Management:
At the end of the day I go home and enjoy my family. We travel together and play music, camp and bicycle. We grow vegetables and care for two cats.
Job Profile:
I offer customer support for applications of Morpholino antisense oligos. I am involved in marketing, both through design & placement of advertizing and by attending conferences. I develop new applications of products and new products. I support production & maintain scientific equipment.
