Could you tell us briefly about your family background?
I am from middle class family from Punjab. My Father is a doctor and mother is a housewife. My younger brother works as a software engineer in a reputed IT company in NCR.
Changes in the industry
In my opinion, in both service as well as products, QA industry is shifting towards Agile. More focus on maximizing the ROI by means of adopting automation across industry. With the advent of tablets and cloud, fields like device testing and security testing are offering great learning opportunities
Most Important Lessons
The important lessons I have learned in my professional life is that perseverance and honesty pays. In QA for instance, exhaustive documentation seems to be a tiring task in short term. But in long term, it contributes to organizational assets, giving out better estimations and hence better planning
Areas for the Future
As more and more enterprises and individuals are shifting towards cloud and devices, domains like device and security testing will be in limelight in future
Essential Advice
QA requires strong analytical as well as technical skills. Apart from skill enhancements like testing certifications, keep yourself updated with the new technologies. Knowing even little bit about the development processes/languages/methodologies helps sometimes.
Role Model
One role model I am inspired from very much is Mr. Ricardo Semler, CEO Semco SA. He transformed an almost bankrupt Semco to the best place to work and a known brand.
The Journey So Far
I am an Electronics engineering graduate from Punjab Technical University. Worked for 3 years at Techmahindra Noida after joining from campus. Then went to Adobe Systems Noida as a Sr SQE for 1.5 years and currently working with Pitney Bowes Business Insight Noida as a Senior QA software engineer
A Fine Balance:
The key to work life balance is time management. Although I am still working to improve my time management, I always tried to make sure to complete assigned tasks on time and spend rest of the time with my family. Saying an honest NO to the tasks which I think I wont be able to deliver, helps a lot.
Points of inflection
At the time of joining my first employer, It was a general perception that testing/QA is a job that anyone can do and being in a testing team was not desirable. I think the inflection point in my career was when I realized the importance of QA and my job profile in the software development cycle.
Current and Previous Responsibilities
My current role is an individual contributor, responsible for planning, executing test cases and automating regression workflows. Since now I am working in a sprint team, I have worked as a Scrum Master, which gave me very good experience.
Plans for the Future
In a couple of years from now, I see myself in a position where I am able to see the bigger picture of the work I contribute to and where I can align my personal goals to the goals of the organization/product
