The Journey: Early Days to How I Got Here
I started as a system developer in expert systems with knowledge
engineering background. Subsequently, I did my Ph.D. in Data mining and
started development, research and consulting services in business
analytics. I have implemented large scale systems for telecom, BFSI and
manufacturing industries in Business Intelligence and Analytics. I have
so far published about 40 papers in international journals and
conferences in the areas of Business Intelligence and Analytics.
Decisions That Mattered
I did my Doctoral degree and got into cutting edge technology before it
became a buzzword. Subsequently, I moved from a big company to a small
company, where I could test my theories and develop solutions to
business problems.
The Turning Points
First inflection point was going for my Ph.D and the other was becoming the CTO of a startup company, Abiba Systems.
Two Years down the Line
Couple of years from now I will be working with fusing polyglot technologies in BI/BA for business problems.
What I Learnt Along the Way
The major lessons that I have learnt in my professional life are that
clarity of purpose and commitment to beliefs will help in reaching any
goal.
Changing Days
I started as a developer of expert system and my profession evolved to include Big Data Analytics as of now.
Trends to Watch Out For
Polyglot Technologies and Data science are two of the interesting
technologies I am watching closely. Though, no clear definitions of each
has become prominent, they have started to become the buzz words like
BI in 2000.
My Advice If You are Starting Out
Start with a mentor; get experience in development and data science with
open source (no investment in costly software/hardware required);
network with like-minded individuals; market yourself.
Must Focus Areas for the Future
In my opinion Data science and Business Visualization are areas that developers could choose to specialize in.
Do We Need Certifications?
Though I recommend successful project experience, I am not really fond of any certification.
Books/ Websites I Recommend
A lot to list here - I suggest reading at least 4 blogs on every area of
BI/BA every week. I think it is necessary to update yourself with the
latest trends.
Last But Not Least
All BI professionals need to ask themselves this question:Do you really
want to be a data scientist or you are taking it up because it pays you
well? Former is passion and latter is ignorance.
