My family background

Education, hard-work and sincerity have been the common attributes of my family. My father is a chemical technologist from ICT Mumbai. He worked for different MNCs and then decided to his own venture. We have a chemical factory and the core activity is manufacturing of photographic and x-ray chemicals. He has established himself in this business for more than 25 years now. My mother is a chemistry graduate from University of Mumbai.
In my extended family, my paternal uncle is from IIT-B and he retired as General Manager L&T. My maternal uncle is MD Chest specialist from KEM.

Initiative to develop a country

What I see missing in Indian professionals is a lack of "ownership". Probably this comes from our education system and strict adherence to hierarchy at all social and business interactions. I think that this is a starting point to make a change in the work culture at each organization. There will be great increment in the productivity as well as value of work if the junior level professionals take ownership of their work in all respects from planning to execution. The dependence on senior members of the team should be reduced. This change in work culture should also be supported by senior professionals who should lead the other rather than micromanaging the team.

Degree that I recommend

I would recommend any courses that add value rather than a title to your job profile. I would recommend a course I recently took in service management from SP Jain, Mumbai. I would also recommend the BARC courses in fundamental physics for professionals working in the field of radiation safety and protection.

Influenced by

So far, I can list two people who have influenced me in a positive manner. One of them is my manager at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory- Dr. Theva Thevuthasan. He inspired me to be detailed, humble and a good leader.
My father has influenced me throughout my life as I have seen him dedicated and focused to build his business, handling the technical as well as commercial world with equal efficiency. Even at 59, he has the drive, passion and sincerity to invest, explore and succeed in new ventures. His vision and the confidence to follow the same influences me the most.

Ensuring success

I have a constant urge to learn and not get saturated with my current level of education/knowledge. With a demanding job, I continue to take courses in management (part-time), specialized courses in physics which all add value to the products and services I am currently involved with. I am also giving teaching a try. I recently delivered a seminar in Applied Nanotechnology at one of the engineering college is Mumbai. Interactions with younger crowd always helps you to grow.

Important decision

The most important decision I would say was the decision to move back to India from US.

An important lesson which I have learned is "Do not assume".

Brief description about me

I am born and brought up in Mumbai, India. Having completed my engineering from University of Mumbai, I went to US to pursue further education. After an engineering degree in Electronics and Telecommunications, MS in Electrical Engineering was the next logical step for enhancing my technical expertise. During my 4 years of stay in US, I completed my MS from Arizona State University and was working for Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in different roles. With the motivation to make a powerful career and join my family back in India, I returned back to India with a job in Pune with the same parent company Battelle India. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and Battelle India are managed by same parent company, Battelle USA.
I am now working with a Swedish company, Unfors RaySafe's subsidiary in India.In a span of 7 years, I have seen myself enjoying and being successful in the role of a research associate, a project manager and VP marketing. I love Mumbai,travelling and my family.

Thoughts on Education system of our country

Education system in India requires a major reform. There is a major disconnect between academics and industry. Industries have to "adopt" Universities (at least department which are into professional courses- Engineering and management). The education system and industries should generate internship positions. Fundamental academics is good, but the application oriented academics are totally missing.
The education system can cut down on "teaching hours" and more time should be given to projects.

My achievements

I am proud of working at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in USA wherein I cultivated qualities of teamwork, detailed-work and passion for the chosen line of work.
I am also proud of working in diverse work-cultures such as a research lab and now in techno-commercial marketing.
