The Social Media Superstars In Indian Government
Political Parties
Not only the politicians, but several political parties also have strong online presence. Considering two major parties, Indian National Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party, the latter emerge as a winner. Even though INC joined Facebook an year before BJP, the account has been slumped in activity after the initial thrust. It also reflects in the followers’ number. However, BJP was able to make good use of the platform and has got more than six lakh likes.
Government Bodies
The first government agency to join the social media was The Ministry Of External Affairs. It started the Facebook account back in 2011 to reach out to people. However, the page lies in a state of neglect. But the Twitter account of the same is in a better condition with over 43000 followers. But still they were not able to leverage the power of social medias.
In Government agencies, the best ones to leverage the power of social media platforms are the traffic police in various cities, mainly Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai Mumbai and Chandigarh. Delhi traffic police are the frontrunner who apart from regular updates, responds to complaints from people and educate them on road security laws. Delhi Traffic Police had recently took an initiative that urged citizens to post photos of traffic offenders and indeed the police was successful in tracking many of them. The Bangalore Traffic police and the Chennai City Traffic Police is also equally active in its Facebook page and has a similar initiative like Delhi Police. However, the Mumbai Traffic Police’s Facebook page has now gone to a hibernation stage, even though it was active during the initial time.
