MobileTV: India's New 'Entertainer'

Bangalore: Gone are the days when people used to sit in front of televisions, eager to know what’s happening around the world and in the mean time, enjoying the contents delivered to their 21 or 29 inch screens. The world has so long been shifting to Smartphones and like many other services, media contents are also streamlining themselves to reach consumers through these mobile devices, marking a gigantic shift from the earlier, known ways of content consumption.

According to a recent Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) report, India will have 130 million mobile internet users by 2014. Powered by this number, and another report which said the mobile TV viewership in India has increased by 65%, a large number of ‘on-the-go’ mobile TV services are hitting the markets to entertain peoples who consume content on non-TV devices like Smartphones, tablets, laptops and personal computers rather than television.

While the market is still nascent, mobile TV services like nexGTv, is gaining momentum by providing more than 100 live channels, short and long length movie, and time based video contents. An estimated number of 27 million people use Smartphone in Urban India which has led to the penetration of mobile TV in the country.

Even though sports and news are most watched content on mobile by Indian consumers, comprehensive services that provide everything are also in demand. At the end of the day, consumers opt for content that may vary from lifestyle, soaps, regional and the like than sticking on to sports and news.
