Will Twitter Be Banned In India?

Bangalore: Provoked by the misinformation campaign that spread through social networking sites and SMS, Indian Government has decided to tighten its clutches on the social media and as a first indication, Twitter, the popular microblogging site may face legal action.

Twitter did not comply with the Government’s order on censoring the objectionable content while other sites including Facebook and YouTube have confirmed to the government that the hate content against the people from north-eastern India had originated from Pakistan. However the U.S. based Twitter’s response was reported to be “poor,” may partly due to the fact that the company doesn’t have any office in India.

Google and Facebook’s offices in India had made it easy for the government officials to cooperate with them quickly and sort out the matter.

According to a senior government official, “Twitter has already been told that legal action may be taken against it as it had failed to cooperate with the Indian government in its efforts to find the source of and curtail the inflammatory messages against north-east citizens,” reports TOI.

The Department of Telecom (DoT) is planning to take immediate actions, if there is no firm response from Twitter.  In an Interview to a TV channel, DoT secretary R Chandrashekhar briefed about the situation. “India may even seek the help of US Department of Homeland Security in order to curb all such websites that carry the hate content, including doctored pictures and other messages. The Government will do whatever is necessary in order to ‘address the problem,’” he said.

Considering the millions of tweets and re-tweets that take place, especially during the situations like what happened in India, it is doubtful that the microblogging site may adhere to the Government rules, and by which, it may face legal action.
