U.S. Denies Apple's Trademark Application for 'iPad Mini'

Bangalore: Apple was denied ‘iPad mini’ application for a trademark by U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) citing ‘the case to own the phrase’ was too weak.

Apple filed a trademark application soon after the launch of iPad mini last year and USPTO had mailed the refusal letter back to Apple on 24 January, but only made public recently, reports Apple Insider.

The reason sited by the trademark authority says "The term 'MINI' in the applied for mark is also descriptive of a feature of applicant's product. Specifically, the attached evidence shows this wording means ‘something that is distinctively smaller than other members of its type or class'.  The word 'mini' has been held merely descriptive of goods that are produced and sold in miniature form," USPTO added.
