Is "Eye Scrolling" Samsung's Foray Into Software?

Bangalore: Samsung’s upcoming flagship phone Galaxy S IV is expected to carry a unique feature that will track user's eyes to scroll or pause the pages on the Smartphone. The company has already filed patents for features called 'Eye Scroll' and 'Eye Pause' in the months of January and February for Europe and US respectively, as reported by New York Times.

Though the technology sounds great, there are some apprehensions about its credibility like— Will my eye movement have to be exaggerated to scroll? Can this eye scrolling thing work consistently? How buggy will this software be? , reports ZDNet.

And these apprehensions are arising mainly because; Samsung till now was viewed as Hardware Company for devices, screens and chips. Save for some of the Android tweaks which made Samsung’s Android Better than Google’s for some reason; it had not yet proved its mettle at software. The other software products by the company were – Galaxy Note’s handy handwriting software, buggy Smart TV software, its SAFE software for corporate use, and Knox to firewall corporate and consumer applications.

Samsung's proficiency with software will determine whether the company can remain dominant in this field, even if it fails, the downside is limited—the company will be simply viewed as a dominant hardware player.

Barclays analyst SC Bae notes that Samsung's eye scrolling application is just one part of a broader push into software.
