Intel To Follow Iteration, Not Innovation

Bangalore: Intel, the renowned chip maker has outlined its processor plans for the coming year, and according to it, we can expect evolution rather than revolution from the company. This move by the chip maker is an attempt to woo the all-important low end, ZDNet reports.

Intel, though upstaged at CES this year, has a big task ahead to square up to Qualcomm's dominance of mobile processors.

Around one year ago Intel broke into mobile chip market using a new version of its Atom processor. And after an year in this segment; its chip was opted by Orange Santa Clara and the Motorola RAZRi, that’s a little to speak about at least in U.K. Though Intel did not take the mobile market by storm, it did have some small wins.

Intel unveiled two chips at CES in Las Vegas on Monday, they were low-power chips namely, the Atom Z2420 (formerly codenamed 'Lexington') and the Z2580 (formerly known as 'Clover Trail +'). The chips were aimed specifically at Smartphones.

The 2420 is the lower speed of the two and is aimed squarely at the huge opportunity that lies in developing markets. The chip has 1.2GHz clock speed, 1080p hardware accelerated encoding and decoding, support for multiple cameras and "advanced imaging capabilities" found in higher-end devices.

The Z2580, in contrast, is aimed at more mainstream or high-end phones, with Intel claiming it's twice as powerful as its current generation Z2460.
