Facebook's Fatal Weapon Against Google Is Out-The Graph Search

Bangalore: Facebook, the social giant, entered into the search business unveiling a feature on Tuesday called Facebook Graph Search, a new smart search tool that focuses on specific details like people, places, photos and interests. It’s designed to tempt the users towards spending more time on the company’s website which indeed is a threat to Google, the search monopoly and other competitors like Yelp and LinkedIn.

Termed as “Graph Search”, it lets the users quickly go through their social connections; especially information’s about people, photos, interests and places. Users can either scroll through all the photos which their friends have taken in Paris or search for friends who like the TV show ‘Fringe’ which can help organize a watch party.

Until now the Facebook users were unable to find their friends who live in another city or who likes a particular movie. It relied strongly on the “Likes” and other connections to decide what to show as the most appropriate search results for each user. But now, it offers search filters; the ability to search based on the user data that Facebook has in its system.

Out of the average 1 billion Facebook users, a fraction will only have access to the new “Graph Search”, because it is in the beta mode and the company plans to implement it in next year which allows the time for tweaking.
