10 Best Tech Rivalries Ever
#4 Motorola VS Apple
Before Motorola was taken over by Google, it attempted to thwart Apple with a 60-second ad during the 2011 Super Bowl(annual championship game of the National Football League—NFL) and the ad for the Xoom tablet, portrayed an antiseptic, Apple-controlled future where rebels used Moto’s device. But the ad didn’t dent the Apple reputation, however Xoom was discontinued later that year.
#3 Microsoft VS Sun Microsystems
Job’s outspoken rhetoric to take shots at rival companies was a rarity in tech world, but another rivalry which was talk of the down in late 1990s was between Microsoft and Sun Microsystems. Scott McNealy, the then CEO of Sun Microsystems, came out on Microsoft heavily, he dismissed Windows NT as a “giant hairball” and dubbed Microsoft’s leadership team as “Ballmer and Butt-head.”
One thing which flared up McNeal is the high licensing fee that Microsoft was charging. At a point, McNealy suggested a solution too. “Shut down some of the bullshit the government is spending money on and use it to buy all the Microsoft stock. Then put all their intellectual property in the public domain. Free Windows for everyone! Then we could just bronze Gates, turn him into a statue and stick him in front of the Commerce Department.”
