Is Netflix Back In The Market?

Fremont: When the report about Netflix loosing almost two-third of its market value came up last year, things looked blurred for the Internet-streaming giant. But, the recently released results of the fourth quarter and full-year by Netflix shows that the company is returning back to its growing stage in terms of net unique subscribers.

Netflix started as a DVDs by mail service in 1997. Later on, in 2007, it started internet video streaming services and created a history of success. However, things started going wrong when the company announced its renewed plan and increased monthly rates. When the company realized its fault, the CEO, Reed Hastings, posted an apology on his blog post tentatively titled ‘An Explanation and Some Reflections’.

However, in the past few months, Netflix has bounced back in the market, though DVD subscribers continue to decline substantially. A bit confusing, but this is the fact. The subscribers are not leaving Netflix as much as before and a substantial decline is due to subscribers dropping hybrid service and moving to streaming only.

The company is recovering, thanks to its new pricing plan. Most of the customers have just downgraded to streaming services resulting in a growing number of unique subscribers. However, Netflix may get competition from Amazon, which is weighing the benefits of moving into the video streaming world with a special plan in addition to the Video On Demand service the company now offers, reports The New York Post.

Netflix signed a multi-year licensing agreement with The Weinstein Company to make foreign language, documentary and certain other movies from them exclusively available for Netflix members. This is going to prove a strong step towards adding success to the organization. Netflix needs to ensure the  transition happens properly and right steps are taken to move there. However, it will be interesting to see how it manages to tackle the competition from online video offered by Amazon and Hulu who also offer online videos, and cable TV companies that can even be a bigger threat for them.

Whatever may be the situation, the real success story of Netflix can be described by the subscribers only who left the company last year. If they have come back again and subscribed to it, then the company is really doing great and will bounce back in the market with full strength.
