- IIT Kanpur 2000 batch donates Rs 100 crore for MSTAS.
- Naveen Tewari and other startup founders lead the record contribution.
- Funds aim to nurture technology, policy, and leadership skills.
India’s top startup founders from the 2000 batch of IIT Kanpur have come together to give back to their alma mater with a donation of Rs 100 crore. The fund will be used to establish the Millennium School of Technology and Society (MSTAS), a new hub aimed at integrating technology, policy, and societal transformation. The school will focus on nurturing critical thinking, leadership, and a global perspective among students. This contribution is the largest batch donation in the institute’s history.
A significant part of the donation, Rs 30 crore, comes from InMobi founder Naveen Tewari, in his personal capacity. InMobi was India’s first unicorn startup, reaching a billion-dollar valuation in 2011. Other contributors include Amit Kumar Agarwal of NoBroker, Amit Gupta of Yulu, and founders of startups like Knowlarity and Card91.
This donation reflects a growing trend of successful Indian entrepreneurs supporting their alma maters. Infosys Co-founder Nandan Nilekani has donated Rs 400 crore to IIT Bombay over time, while IIT Bombay also received
160 crore in 2023 from an anonymous alumnus. Other notable contributions include Rs 100 crore from Indigo’s Rakesh Gangwal to IIT Kanpur, Rs 20 crore from Happiest Minds’ Ashok Soota to IIT Roorkee, and Rs 10 crore from Reckitt’s Rakesh Kapoor to BITS Pilani.

The MSTAS initiative at IIT Kanpur marks a significant step in fostering innovation and leadership among future Indian technologists and entrepreneurs. With alumni support pouring in, institutes are increasingly becoming hubs where education meets real-world impact.
