Google Unveils AI-Powered Map Features for India
As the year approaches its end, Google has introduced several substantial upgrades to its Maps application in India, with the aim of improving user interaction and setting the stage for future enhancements. One of these updates involves incorporating Lens, an AI-powered feature designed to streamline searching within the app. Google revealed in an official blog post the launch of Lens in Maps tailored specifically for the Indian audience. Describing the new feature, Google stated that users can effortlessly point their camera along a street, promptly gaining access to details about nearby restaurants and cafes.
A new feature called Address Descriptors has been introduced in India, tailored to enhance user experience by automatically identifying relevant landmarks and area names around a specified address on Google Maps. This addition aims to provide location references that are pertinent to users. Furthermore, Google is expanding the functionality of Live View walking navigation in India, allowing users to see directions overlaid on the Maps screen. Miriam Daniel, VP and GM of Google Maps, highlighted that this feature will assist users in quickly determining their route.
Google's overarching objective with Maps has always centered on making real-world information easily accessible to all individuals. Daniel emphasized how artificial intelligence (AI) has revolutionized the mapping process for almost a decade, allowing the creation of a comprehensive, current, and useful map. Alongside Address Descriptors and Live View, other new features include fuel-efficient routing, presenting eco-friendly alternative routes to reduce CO2 emissions. Moreover, Google is expanding the Where Is My Train app to encompass Mumbai and Kolkata Local Trains, with intentions to extend its coverage to more cities in the future.
