Foxconn invests $10 billion in India & wish to infuse more in Future: Chairman Young Liu
Taiwan based electronics manufacturer Foxconn’s chairman Young Liu said that it has invested $10 billion in India so far and they has furher plans to infuse more capital in the country in the upcoming years.
In a media interview Young Liu told,“So far, till last year, we have done $10 billion. We will do much more in this coming year.”
Commenting on the inauguration of a women-only residential complex near its plant in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, Liu underscored India's growing potential and expressed the company's intention to be part of the country's development.
According to the report, the complex, developed by the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT), will provide housing for over 18,000 female employees on a room-sharing basis. Spanning 20 acres, the project was built at a cost of
706 crore.
In response to allegations of job discrimination against married women at its Tamil Nadu plant, Liu emphasized that the company hires employees based on merit, regardless of gender.
The Foxconn chairman also added, “Foxconn hires regardless of gender, but women do make up a big part of our workforce here. I would emphasise that married women greatly contribute to the efforts of what we are doing here.”
Liu commented this just after two months of publishing of report where tech giant Apple’s vendor has started following few discriminatory hiring processes where they excluded the married women from the jobs at its iPhone assembly facility in Sriperumbudur.
At that time when they were asked about such discriminatory behavious, they said that Foxconn “generally refrains” from hiring married women due to perceived ‘cultural issues’ and 'societal pressures'.
iphone maker brand Apple has rejected the allegation saying that 25% of their newly hired employees are married women. While, Foxconn claimed that they have employed 70% married women in their workforce.
Notably, Foxconn presently has around 48,000 employees in India. These developments occur as Liu is on a multi-leg visit to India. On the eve of Independence Day, he met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss Foxconn’s investments in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Telangana. He also held discussions with the chief ministers and state cabinet ministers of these three states.
