Recycling Mumbai’s Waste
After leather and textile, recycling is the next biggest industry in Dharavi. The slum pumps about $75 Million a year from a mass of 250,000 people who spend their days recycling thousands of tones of glass, paper, tin and plastic. “Dharavi remains a land of recycling opportunity for many rural Indians. The average household in Dharavi now earns between 3,000 and 15,000 rupees a month, well above agricultural wage levels,” reports Saving Earth.
