App Developers claims Google Misuses its market Power against Small Firms

Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister of Railways, Communications, Electronics & Information Technology has pledged to secure Google eliminating Indian apps from Google Play Store.

Recently Google has disrupted Indian apps that it declares that not align with its regulationss for payments. On this regard, Vaishnav demanded the Indian apps must be restored in the Play Store and promised to save Indian apps.

He said, “I have already called Google’s, I have already called the app developers which have been delisted, we will be meeting them next week”.

Further he added, “This cannot be permitted. This kind of de-listing cannot be permitted”.

Similarly, Rajeev Chandrashekhar, Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship stated in his X post, “Government will continue to work towards a level playing field for big and small firms alike while creating an ecosystem that will catalyze growth for startups”.

Sharing their concerns on this issue, Indian app companies body ADIF – Alliance of Digital India Foundation says that Google is misusing its dominant market Position in India to invade Indian small business and start-ups. Also by charging higher than charges, the troubled move of Google is violating the Digital personal data protection Act, it added.

Speaking to this, ADIF said, “The government has assured us support for both immediate resolution and long-term framework. They extended support for our concerns, which were mainly about discriminative pricing, arbitrary revenue share, and Google misusing its dominant position in the market”.

At the same time, Vinay Singhal, CEO, Stage OTT app that removed by the Google From Play Store said, “Google is misusing its dominant position in the market and price gouging to extract unnecessary exorbitant revenue out of small start-ups”.

Further he added, “Most payment gateways charge 0.5-2 percent charges, whereas Google charges 15-30 percent for the same. Google is using its dominant position to price itself at a 30 percent revenue share, without giving any justifications”.

Snehil Khanor, Co-Founder & CEO of Truly Madly - matchmaking app says, “The service of Google Play Store remains the same for big names like Amazon, Uber and relatively smaller players like Kuku FM, Stage, Kutumb, and Truly Madly, but there is discrimination in charging where they are charging 15-30 per cent from small apps, while they are charging nothing from the big names”.
